Tourists looking at the stars

The novelty of the new classification system for Italian hotels (and the concerns of hoteliers)

In 1324 the state of the art in Florence promulgated Hoteliers Innkeepers forced the city to exhibit a sign of in which it depicts a small star.

The star, of course: unit became the very symbol hotel industry, maintains a crucial role in defining quality of the facilities and their services. The problem is that this parameter is losing its credibility. The main cause is due to the excessive fragmentation of the allocation system the stars, and then managed regionally delegated to individual municipalities.

The government is seeking to return authority to the traditional classification of stars, through a single standard is now known to all stakeholders. It's called "Italy & stars rating." The idea is certainly good: to ensure visitors a means immediate, reliable and harmonious. In recent months, however, some doubts have crept between operators.

The first point concerns the allocation criteria of the stars, which are referred to the new hotels and those under construction, but also how it will be possible to harmonize the existing ones? For most of these accommodation will be difficult if not impossible, to adapt to new standards, except in cases of complete renovation. Then there is the

rating, the rating system on a voluntary basis additional to the classification itself, which measures the level of comfort and service features. The comments came from the major trade associations are all gone in the same direction parallel to the certification if you do not activate the supervisory bodies (remains to be seen whether anyone will notice them and who will be), the initiative will be nullified and hence the credibility of Made in Italy will not.

another element of perplexity regards the preparation of implementing regulations: it seems that the regions should be left the possibility of exceptions, at least in part, the national legislation. In fact it is good to clarify this point, as the Official Journal that adherence to specific standards is not required solely for the structural and dimensional requirements.

Meanwhile, the European Parliament has started the legislative process that will lead to the adoption of common criteria in awarding stars in all countries of the community. Needless to say, the Italian classification need to agree with the European one, otherwise damage to the target Italy. What
